You would think, wouldn't you! The tests were carried out in the lab and it is not clear what concentration of essential oil was used. Essential oils have been used therapeutically for thousands of years because of their effectiveness in treating many illnesses and diseases. The dilution for therapeutic use is very low (generally around 2%) which for most oils is found to be a safe level to apply to the skin.

You are right that care should be taken with their use, I would always recommend using a therapist who is fully trained and knows the contra-indications and toxicity risks for specific applications. For safety reasons, it is recommended that an oil is not used for more than a couple of weeks to avoid any adverse reaction.

The wonderful thing with essential oils is that the combination of constituents in the oil has a synergistic effect on the body (i.e. each component works in harmony with the others to enhance the overall effect). They work on the emotional level as well as physical, so the beneficial effect is double!
